Since I can remember, my dream has been to own an Arabian. As a girl I played with Breyers horses and dreamed of riding one of these beautiful creatures. I joined the army at 18, and that dream faded for many years. I moved every three years and the thought of owning a horse just did not fit in the picture.
But every chance I had to be around them, I did whatever I could to be near these beautiful creatures. After my children were grown and out of the house, I bought a small place where I could own a few horses. I read in the paper about a huge group of Arabians that had been starved and needed homes. I made the call and went out to take a look at them.
They were nothing but skin and bones, but in their eyes was pride. I found a foal who had been born after they were seized. She stole my heart right then and there. You could not get near her, because her Mom was aggressive and not approachable. She was named “Chaos”, and boy did that fit. And then there was “Dakota”, who weighed 180 pounds as a two year old. She was so weak they had to hold her up when they moved her from the neglect. She was a beautiful chestnut who was in with the foals. She watched over them and kept them in line once they were weaned.
I started working with all the foals there hoping we could find homes for all them. Each day I would try and win Chaos’s trust. Everyday I was amazed that these gorgeous creatures still wanted that human contact, after what man had done to them. They still whinnied when someone went out to them. Of course there were a couple that wanted no part of us humans, but who could blame them.
There was a beautiful dark bay who had been beaten and had the scars to show for it. She was very unsure of everyone and any quick movement made her tremble and run off. But she was so beautiful…but she had already been spoken for. Still, everyday I tried to approach her and show her a kind hand. A week before my horses were to come home, I was asked if I wanted her! I did not hesitate for a second and said yes.
So now Tridents is once again on the move. We have purchased a beautiful ranch in Powhatan and will begin a new adventure for Tridents to embrace. I will be down to six horses with Sapphire Prince still in training at Tommy Garland’s barn. He will begin his show career this spring and the best news is he is in training just a couple miles down the road. Look for his first progeny to hit the ground in April
Oc course I once again mention the love of my life without him none of this would have come true. He has given me so much, he will never know what he has done. He puts up with my horse passion and never complains. He knew my love for horses and has helped make this dream a reality. For that, I love him, and for his kindness and patience when a fence needs to be repaired, or in the rain we need to get a horse inside. He is my rock that is always there.
